How to track orders from ChatGPT and other AI assistants.

More shoppers start in an AI assistant and finish on your site. Those orders are easy to miss. Some show up as an AI channel, some as “Direct”, and almost nobody follows up on those customers.

What changed in 2026

ChatGPT’s in-chat checkout was retired in March 2026. Discovery stays in the assistant, but most purchases now happen on the store’s own checkout.

Shopify’s Agentic storefronts made eligible stores shoppable in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Shopify reports those orders under its own Agentic sales channel. Google Analytics 4 added an “AI Assistant” channel in May 2026.

Where to look

  • In Shopify: Sales channels → Agentic, for orders per AI channel.
  • In GA4: the AI Assistant default channel group, from May 2026 onwards; earlier data is not reclassified.
  • In your order list: the referrer and landing page of first orders, to spot AI visits that arrived without a referrer.
  • In your product feed links: consistent UTM tags, so clicks from AI shopping results are labelled.

Why the numbers disagree

A share of AI visits arrives without a referrer and lands in Direct. Google’s own AI Mode is still counted as organic search in GA4. Shopify’s Agentic report and GA4’s AI Assistant channel therefore rarely match.

Treat the attributed number as a floor, not the total. The trend over months matters more than the exact count.

What to do with those customers

An AI-referred buyer often saw one product page and nothing else. They don’t know your story, your other products or when to reorder.

Tag them as a group, send a short welcome that introduces your shop, and remind them when their product is likely to run out, with a direct reorder link. The goal is that the second order starts with you, not with a new question to a chatbot.

How Oftenflow helps

Oftenflow recognises first orders from AI assistants and proposes a welcome and a well-timed reminder, so the second order comes to you.
